On Monday, April 25th the University of Edinburgh and the Chinese Peoples Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries jointly sponsored the seminar, “Universities and the Knowledge Society: the Role of International Collaboration.” Held in the Association’s Friendship Hall, the purpose of the seminar was stated as “to reflect on the challenges that [this agenda] poses for research and for research intensive universities in both Europe and China, on how governments and universities are responding to it, and on how it should influence inter-university collaboration.”
Professor Geoffrey Boulton of the University of Edinburgh chaired the first session of the seminar, titled “The motivation and basis for collaboration”. Chen Haosu, President of the China EU Association, presented the first speech, and was followed by the Principal of Edinburgh University, Professor Timothy O’Shea. The third morning speaker was Ambassador Mr. Serge Abou, Head of the EU delegation to China, who was succeeded by Ms. Alex Thompson, Directory of Education Relations of the British Embassy in Beijing. Zhang Ning, Assistant Director General of the Department of International Affairs of the Ministry of Education, closed the morning session.
After a short intermission Mr. Ji Bin of the China-EU Association chaired the second session, “Key Policies and Strategies for Government and Universities.” Speakers included Professor Hou Zixin; President of Nankai University, Michael Banner; Professor and director of the Genomics Forum at Edinburgh University, and others.
