The Old Town of Pingyao is located in central Shanxi Province. This ancient town is one of the best preserved cities in China and was populated by the Han ethnic group.
The city wall of Pingyao extends for 6.2 kilometers and is 12 meters high. Pingyao was originally built to resist attacks from northern nomads. Inside the town there are 72 small watchtowers that represent each one of Confucius' disciples. Pingyao include 4 big streets, 8 small streets and 72 lanes and 3,797 courtyard houses.
The Old Town of Piangyao is mainly known for 3 historical treasures: the ancient large-brick city wall, the Zhenguo Temple, and the Shuanglin Temple.
