Qufu is a historical and cultural city located in Shandong Province and known as the hometown of Confucius. The town is most famous for 3 relics: the Confucian Temple, Confucian Cemetery and Confucian Family Mansion.
The Confucian Temple was built around the house that Confucius grew up in and is the largest Confucian temple in the world, built in memory of Confucius. It lies in the center of Qufu and has 466 buildings that occupy 22 hectares of land. The Hall of Great Achievements is considered the temple's most important building. It includes 28 stone pillars carved with dragons.
The Family Mansion covers over 13 hectares including 463 halls, rooms, indivual houses and verandas. It was the residence of Confucius' descendants and lies next to the Confucian Temple. Seventy-seven generations of Chinese nobility lived in the mansion and it reflects the power of the Kong Family. The mansion is divided into 3 parts: official buildings, the residence and the garden.
The Confucian Cemetery is also known as "The Forest," because of its many exotic trees. It contains some 20,000 trees and occupies over 200 hectares of land. The cemetery contains the tomb of Confucius and the tombs of over 100,000 descendants that have been buried there in the last 2500 years.
