The Longman Grottoes are located near Luoyang, Henan Province and contain a impressive collection of Chinese stone carvings. These works are devoted to the Buddhist religion.
Longmen has the largest number of statues and grottoes in all of China. Altogether it contains 2,300 grottoes,over 1,352 caves, 785 niches, more than 97,0000 statues of Buddha, 2800 inscriptions and 43 pagodas.
The construction of the Longmen Grottoes continued through 6 dynasties, for a period that lasted over 400 years. The most intensive and best carvings were done in Northern Wei (30%) and Tang dynasties (60%).
