Traditional courtyards are a familiar sight in
Beijing, attracting thousands of wide-eyed tourists every year. The following is
a brief guide to the noteworthy features of these historic homes.
Drooping Flower Gate
The "drooping flower gate" is the most splendid gate in a standard Beijing
courtyard. Situated on the axle line of the house and between the north and
south rows of rooms, it separates the house into the inner and outer parts. In
the past, the inner residence was where women lived and was usually closed to
visitors.
The gate gets its name from the special design of its outer eaves. On the
front eave of the gate there is a horizontal wood bar supported by two pillars
on each side. On the pillars are carved drooping lotus flowers, hence the name.
The drooping flower gate is known for its exquisite design. It is almost
completely covered with carved stone and colorfully painted patterns. The wooden
slats on the front of the gate are usually decorated with bright characters that
symbolize longevity and prosperity.
