Huizhou lies in the joint zone of three
provinces---Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces, and is near Anhui province.
During the Ming and Qing Dynasties Huizhou teemed with bamboo, wood, tea and the
four treasures of the study. Its natural scenery was extremely beautiful and
economy and culture were very developed.
With the artistic charm of its unique architecture and carved decorations,
Huizhou's ancient architecture and art catches the attention of the world. Most
of Huizhou's ancient buildings are brick and wood construction. Withstanding the
test of time and the elements for hundreds of years, they still lift up their
heads to show their strong vitality from two aspects of architecture and
aesthetics: they not only reflect Huizhou people's wisdom and grandeur, but also
indicate that architecture art and art of carved decorations are cultural
treasures.
The traditional art of architectural carved decorations attaches importance
to harmony of solidity and aesthetics in structures. The carved parts are
processed appropriately and the figures and colors are natural and proper. Wood
carving, stone carving, brick carving and bamboo carving are called the four
wonders of Huizhou carving. They can go well with the whole buildings, and at
the same time they are so fresh and elegant that they are just like Chinese
painting. Among them the woodcarving especially provides the crowning touch to
the ancient buildings.
If you can go there you will feel that you are in a palace of art. You will
be enchanted by the beauty of the carvings. Their exquisiteness and elegance
will leave you endlessly fascinated.
