The British Council is bringing together more than 50 young people in London from around the globe to discuss key issues of global significance in the run up to the Annual World Economic Forum meeting in DAVOS. This is an opportunity for two outstanding young Chinese to contribute to a global debate.
For more information about key DAVOS themes please visit the World Economic Forum’s website at http://www.weforum.org/en/events/index.htm
The event is expected to take place in the week beginning 13 January 2008. Successful candidates will have much to share with their families as they return for the Chinese New Year in February 2008. All costs will be covered by the British Council.
Please could you return your initial electronic expression of interest by the 8 October 2007. In the first instance we would need your application to be accompanied by
a) Details of your English fluency and experience, including any examinations taken and grades e.g. CET, IELTS, TOEFL.
b) A completed electronic copy of the application form below
c) Details of two people we would be able to contact for references and verification
The Guidelines below are a full list of the selection criteria.
Candidates should:
1. Be aged 16-19. Show evidence of very strong leadership capability (potential WEF Young Global Leaders’ Forum candidates). Have an outgoing personality, be confident and assertive in English. Be ready to contribute and network, and have experience of debate and discussion on serious issues. Be prepared to voice informed opinion. Have good analytical skills. International awareness/experience would be useful. Be ready to continue to engage with the British Council after the event. Have exceptional speaking skills in English
2. Must be active in their community. We want people who are already not just committed to change but active. They are taking responsibility personally and not waiting for others to do something for them. The subject matter can be diverse. For example in climate change, starting their own business, starting and leading a group, running their own media (online or traditional), an arts group for a minority section of the population etc. They will preferably be leaders and initiators of their own groups who have already attracted attention in the media possibly by winning an awards in their field.
3. Must be assertive and articulate, in English. Look at the WEF session on the WEF website. Can you picture yourself sitting on stage in front of 200 leaders and saying they are not doing enough? Or could you meet a world renowned financial leader and make a pitch for funding in 30 seconds?
We are looking for people who want the world’s leaders to be accountable to, and supportive of, them personally.
If you feel you are the person we’re looking for, please send your electronic application to:
