概述

Introduction Beatrix Potter conceived her story of a little rabbit’s misadventures in Mr. McGregor’s garden in 1893 as an illustrated letter to the young son of her friend and former governess, Annie Moore.

Over a century later, Potter’s tale of Peter Rabbit, remains one of the world’s best-loved children’s stories.
2002 celebrated the centenary of Frederick Warne’s publication of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The next few years will celebrate the centenaries of other favourite characters, including Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-duck, Mrs. Tittlemouse and Mr. Jeremy Fisher.
This exhibition will provide an opportunity to introduce and promote the life and work of Beatrix Potter to a new readership in China, exploring her literary and artistic achievements. It will also reveal the breadth of her interests in natural history, farming, and the preservation of the English countryside – passions that inspired and informed her work as a writer and illustrator. Previous touring exhibitions of Beatrix Potter’s work have attracted well over 1,000 visitors a day.
Beatrix Potter’s tales delight both children and adults all over the world and are translated into more than 35 languages. Over 100 million Beatrix Potter books have been sold worldwide since 1984. In 2004 Frederick Warne introduced the original and authorised edition of the 23 Peter Rabbit books to China, translated into Mandarin by Wu Qing, Chen Shu and Shi Mingli and published in Beijing by Zhongguo Shao nian er tong chu ban she. The V&A Collection The Victoria and Albert Museum has the world’s largest collection of Beatrix Potter artworks. Its collection is continually expanding with new acquisitions of previously unseen drawings and photographs and, in addition, the V&A also houses several loan collections, soon to include the Frederick Warne Archive with its complete set of original illustrations to The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
Artworks from the V&A’s Beatrix Potter Collections have been exhibited in major exhibitions worldwide, in particular, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and locations throughout the USA.Among the V&A’s treasures are original book illustrations for the little books, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit; preliminary pencil and pen-and-ink sketches; over 500 photographs taken by Beatrix’s father, Rupert Potter, many of Beatrix as a child and young adult; sketchbooks, literary manuscripts and correspondence, including the remarkable original Peter Rabbit picture letter sent to Noel Moore on 6th September 1893; expertly observed natural history studies; and beautiful landscapes of the English Lake District. Exhibition Content Exhibition themes may include: • Beatrix Potter’s childhood, including photographs and early work • Artistic and literary beginnings, including work for Christmas cards • Natural history studies, including fungi and microscopic studies, which influenced her naturalistic approach to illustration • Letters to children, including the beginnings of her books • The story of the publication of the Tale of Peter Rabbit • Her books, including preliminary studies and finished illustrations • Beatrix Potter’s later life as a conservationist and sheep farmer Exhibition Details The exhibition is available to have a multi venue tour in China from 2009 onwards
