The 20th century has seen a rapid increase in urbanisation, with our towns and cities growing at unprecedented rates. Sustainable urbanisation is one of the most pressing challenges facing the global community in the 21st century.
In 1950, one-third of the world’s people lived in cities. Just 50 years later, this proportion has risen to one-half and will continue to grow to two-thirds, or 6 billion people, by 2050. Cities are now home to half of humankind.
Urbanisation brings many opportunities for economic growth, but also brings increasing levels of urban poverty. Local governments have a crucial role, as community leaders and service providers, in acting as catalysts for development in cities, as well as in rural areas.
United Cities and Local Governments works closely with UN-Habitat, the UN agency for urban and human settlements issues, to implement the 1996 Habitat Agenda.
